European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
ID21 - X-ray Microscopy Beamline

The ID21 beamline is dedicated to micro and nano-X ray spectroscopy, 2D X-ray fluorescence (XRF) mapping and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), in the tender X-ray domain (2.1-10.5keV). These two techniques can be combined to acquire multi-energy XRF maps. Therefore, this beamline offers 2D elemental mapping and speciation information (in 0D, 1D and 2D), and is particularly optimized for the detection and chemical analysis of elements from P to Zn. Heavier elements can be analyzed through their L and M absorption edges. The beamline has recently been refurbished, and offers now two scanning X-ray microscopes: a new nanoscope (nano-SXM), optimized for high speed, high resolution (<180nm) nano-XRF mapping, and for nano-XAS, which complements and outperforms the "old" microscope, which has been preserved for the study of larger samples, with micrometric and submillimetric beam. Both microscopes are operated under vacuum, either at room temperature or in cryogenics conditions, the latter allowing the study of frozen hydrated biological specimens.

The former µ-XRD branch, full-field XANES end-station and the µ-infrared end-station are no longer available.

M0

Description
At ID21, the white beam is conditioned in the Optics hutch (OH1) by means of a fixed-exit horizontally-deflecting mirror device (M0) consisting of two flat silicon mirrors. The grazing angle of this device can be varied from 7 to 20 mrad using either Pt, Rh, Si or Ni reflective coatings. This allows high-order harmonics rejection factors greater than 10-3 in an energy range between 1 and 12 keV, with an overall transmission greater than 70 %. The two mirrors are water cooled from the sides and were designed for a maximum power absorbed in the first mirror of about 700W. The mirror system coupled to a safety collimator allows the rejection of high energies and bremsstrahlung radiation, leading to a significant reduction of the shielding required for the downstream beam transport.
