ID22 - High Resolution Powder Diffraction Beamline

Beamline for high-resolution powder diffraction, optimized for capillary samples, though plate specimens are also possible. For capillaries, the wavelength and capillary size are chosen to maximize intensity, with 0.4 Å (31 keV) a common choice for a wide range of materials. The overall operational energy range is 6 to 70 keV (0.18 - 2.1 Å). Various sample environments allow studies in the range 4 K to 1600°C. A sample-changing robot allows up to 75 capillary samples to be mounted sequentially, and is compatible with the temperature range 80 K to 950°C. A gas cell allows samples to be studied under a range of atmospheres. Measurements to high Q for PDF analysis are also possible, either by scanning the high resolution diffractometer to high angle at intermediate energies (e.g. 35 keV), or, more rapidly, via a complementary 41x41 cm2.Perkin Elmer XRD1611 medical imaging detector operating at 60 - 70 keV, to measure the whole pattern simultaneously.
