European Synchrotron Radiation Facility
ID21 - X-ray Microscopy Beamline

ID21 offers a multimodal set of state-of-the-art techniques for micro-spectroscopic analyses in the tender X-ray (2-9.2keV).

The scanning X-ray microscope offers sub-micron resolution (0.2×0.7µm²) and ppm detection limits for micro-X-ray fluorescence (µ-XRF) and micro X-ray absorption spectroscopy (µ-XANES). It operates in vacuum and samples can be studied under cryogenic conditions, allowing the study of frozen hydrated biological specimens (cryosectioned tissues). Typical applications are mapping and speciation of nanoparticles and metal pollutants in soils and organic matrices (e.g plants). The full-field XANES end-station will not be available at restart. The former µ-XRD branch and the  µ-infrared end-station are no longer available.

Other Optics

M0

Description
At ID21, the white beam is conditioned in the Optics hutch (OH1) by means of a fixed-exit horizontally-deflecting mirror device (M0) consisting of two flat silicon mirrors. The grazing angle of this device can be varied from 7 to 20 mrad using either Pt, Rh, Si or Ni reflective coatings. This allows high-order harmonics rejection factors greater than 10-3 in an energy range between 1 and 12 keV, with an overall transmission greater than 70 %. The two mirrors are water cooled from the sides and were designed for a maximum power absorbed in the first mirror of about 700W. The mirror system coupled to a safety collimator allows the rejection of high energies and bremsstrahlung radiation, leading to a significant reduction of the shielding required for the downstream beam transport.
